Maidan Wardak Floods, July 2023
In July 2023, Afghanistan faced severe flooding due to heavy seasonal rainfall, resulting in the loss of lives and dozens of missing persons over a three-day period. The flash floods, triggered by intense rains, affected seven provinces across the country, causing significant damage to residential homes and hundreds of acres of agricultural land. Maidan Wardak province experienced the highest number of casualties, with at least 30 people killed and 25 others injured.

On July 26, our healthcare teams treated 318 flood victims, providing them with medicine and advice.

Herat Earthquakes, October 2023
In early October 2023, Herat Province in western Afghanistan was struck by four large earthquakes, each measuring 6.3 in magnitude, along with numerous aftershocks. The first two earthquakes occurred on October 7 at 11:11 AFT and 11:42 AFT near the city of Herat, followed by many aftershocks. Two additional magnitude 6.3 earthquakes hit the same area on October 11 and 15. These earthquakes were associated with thrust faulting. The World Health Organization estimated 1,482 fatalities, 2,100 injuries, 43,400 people affected, and 114,000 people in need of humanitarian aid.
